PIRATE BOYS GOLFER KALEB THINGELSTAD ADVANCES TO SECTION GOLF TOURNEY

The Crookston Pirate Boys Golf team shot a 354 and finished sixth place at the North Sub-Section Meet at the Minakwa Golf Club in Crookston. Roseau won the meet with a 311, Hawley finished second place and Warroad was third and all three advance to the Section 8A meet next week.  “We knew for us to get out as a team we were going to need one of our best days of the year,” said Pirate Coach Steve Kofoed. “We got off to a good start, but then we started having some big holes and that hurt us.”

Crookston will only have one individual advancing to the Section 8A golf tournament as Kaleb Thingelstad shot an 84 and was in a four-way tie for the final four individual spots.  Thingelstad came out for golf for the first time this season.  “He had a really good up and down on the last hole to make the cut,” said Coach Kofoed. “He had a great finish and he ended up getting in and he is excited to make it to the section meet.”

Blaine Andringa shot an 85 and missed going to the section meet by one stroke. “Blaine had a good round and started with a great hole, but the next hole he had a big number so that hurt him,” said Coach Kofoed. “It was still a solid round and he is bummed to miss the cut by one stroke.”

Jaxon Wang wrapped up his Pirate career with a 92.  “He had a few holes that hurt him today,” said Coach Kofoed. “He knew he had to be aggressive the rest of the way to have a chance to make it.  It was nice having him be with us for the last six years.  It was fun having him on the team.”

Garrett Fischer turned in a 93.  “He had a solid round today and one of his best varsity rounds,” said Coach Kofoed. “As a seventh-grader he did well.  Now he knows what it takes as a member of the tournament team and he has the ability to be a very good golfer for us and it wouldn’t surprise me if he is 10 to 12 strokes better next year.”

Ashton Shockman shot a 94. “Ashton had a few bad holes, had some pretty good holes, and played some bogey golf for a while,” said Coack Kofoed. “He is another young one for us and if he puts in some time this summer, he could have a pretty good year next year.”

Gavin Anderson wrapped up his Pirate career with a 95. “He parred the final hole of his career and he gave a nice fist pump when he did that,” said Coach Kofoed. “I just wonder what kind of scores he would have had if he would have been a part of our team for four or five years.  He was fun to have on the team and I was happy to see how much he improved over the season.”

The Section 8AA meet will be held June 7 and 8 at Bemidji’s Town and Country Club.
