CROOKSTON BOY’S TENNIS WINS FIRST MATCH OF SEASON WITH A WIN IN MOORHEAD

The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team lost to the Moorhead Spuds in a dual in Crookston one week ago, but they bounced back to beat the Spuds 5-2 in a dual in Moorhead today.  The win was the first of the year for the Pirates.   The Pirates were hoping to get a win on Saturday because it was the last match that Head Coach Cody Brekken, who is being deployed with the North Dakota National Guard for a year, was able to coach this season.  “Cody and I were joking that the first win would come after he left,” said Co-Head Coach Pat Janorshke. “The boys have been working hard and getting better each day and it was good to get the first win.”

Moorhead used a different lineup, but they played with the same players as they did last week against Crookston.    Crookston won all three doubles matches with the first doubles team of Mason Owens and Evan Christensen winning a three-set match 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. “Mason and Evan played great together.  They make a good team and they duked it out in every point,” said Coach Janorschke. “They played excellent and won some big points.”

The second doubles team of Isaac Thomforde and Nathan Kelly also won in three sets with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory.  “I went up to talk to the guys after the second set and they said they got it,” said Coach Janorschke. “I love they had the confidence and it showed as they took care of businesses, especially at the end of the match.”

The third doubles team of Xander Kuchan and George French won their match 6-3, 6-1. “They are really coming together and have become a good team,” said Coach Janorschke. “They are communicating well, playing great and got a nice win.”

Crookston’s two singles wins came at second and third singles with Erik Coauette winning another three-set match 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 at second singles.  “I think Erik thrives on the three-set matches,” said Coach Janorschke. “He fought hard and battled back and was the last match on the courts.”

The fifth victory came from Reggie Winjum at third singles 6-2, 6-4. “He had great confidence and it showed as he won pretty easily,” said Coach Janorschke.

Crookston improves to 1-13 on the year and will host Perham and East Grand Forks on Friday afternoon. “Everybody was excited to get that first win.  There were a lot of smiles and it was a good bus ride home,” said Coach Janorschke. “The boys are excited to get back to practice to work on getting better.”
