The University of Minnesota Crookston only had two hits in a 4-1 loss to Upper Iowa in game one and bounced back to record 11 hits and a 3-0 victory in the second game to earn a split in the Northern Sun Conference doubleheader in Fayette, Iowa.
Neither team had a hit in the first two innings and Upper Iowa had the first two hits of the game in the third inning, but didn’t score.
In the top of the fourth inning, UMC’s Cassie Querry (Cassville, PA) was hit by a pitch to give the Golden Eagles a baserunner with two outs. Hanna Macias (West Covina, CA) walked and Alina Avalos (Soph. Riverside, CA) singled up the middle to score a run to give UMC a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Upper Iowa responded with a run on a single to center field to tie the game at 1-1.
Upper Iowa extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored three runs on five hits. They scored two runs on a double and another run on a single for a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, UMC’s Jordan Peterson (Jr. Lakeville) doubled with one out, but the next two batters were retired and Upper Iowa held on for a 4-1 victory.

GAME TWO –
The start of the second game was better, for a moment, for UMC. They had a singles from Gabriella Blomdahl (Soph. Duluth) and Velasquez, but the next batter lined into a triple play and the Golden Eagles were retired.
In the top of the second inning, Dana Zarn (Soph. Winnipeg, Manitoba) singled to lead off the inning and after a ground out, Querry singled and scored a run and the Golden Eagles led 1-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, Peterson singled to lead off the inning and Querry hit a home run over the centerfield fence for a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Upper Iowa had two hits and runners at first and second base, but the Golden Eagles got out of the mini jam to keep the 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Upper Iowa doubled to lead off the end, but the next batter lined into a double play and the next batter grounded out and UMC held on for a 3-0 victory to earn the split.
UMC is now 7-21 overall and 3-11 in NSIC play and will play Winona State on Sunday. Upper Iowa is now 9-18 overall and 5-9 in the NSIC.
