At approximately 12:22 pm on Tuesday, April 6th, the Grand Forks Fire Department was dispatched to 3506 Cherry St. for a report of a structure fire.
Fire crews arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof of the structure. Crews worked and extinguished the fire in approximately 30 minutes. The structure sustained significant fire damage to the roof and second floor, with water and smoke damage throughout the rest. Estimated property loss is $200,000. Fire Marshals investigated and determined the cause of the fire to be from careless use of smoking materials. Displaced tenants are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
The Grand Forks Fire Department responded with five engines, one truck, and one command vehicle with twenty-one personnel. There were no injuries, and one cat was removed alive and well. The Fire Department was assisted by the Grand Forks Police Department, Altru Ambulance, American Red Cross, Xcel Energy, and the City of Grand Forks Inspections Office.
