Help support the Villa St. Vincent Resident Council and Villa St. Vincent Auxiliary with their online fundraiser. Since Covid-19 they have not been able to bake sales and other fundraisers.  To order soup and dip mixes, cutlery, kitchen utensils, kitchen pans, and gifts, go here, then type in Villa St Vincent Resident Council/Auxiliary in the fundraising group. 

The Crookston V.F.W. has kicked off its Annual Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Competition for students in grades 6-8.  The theme is “What is Patriotism to Me”.  For details visit https://www.vfw.org/PatriotsPen. They also have a V.F.W. Voice of Democracy Scholarship competition for local high school students. The theme is “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned”. There will be no school for all Crookston Public Schools through Friday, October 16. 

The Golden Link will have coffee & rolls today at 8:30 a.m., and the movie “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” at 1 p.m. 

The Crookston Eagles will have Bar Bingo tonight at 6:00 p.m.  The kitchen will serve assorted baskets from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The Grand Theatre will show a free family Halloween Movie each Saturday at noon through October 31. 

High School Homecoming Week Coronation will be held Sunday, October 18 at 7 p.m. Only parents and student council members will be allowed to attend. The coronation will be livestreamed by KROX on YouTube here. Subscribe and hit the notification bell to be notified when KROX goes live on YouTube with local sports and other community events. 

The Crookston High School Homecoming week days are below. Monday, October 19 will be Spots vs. Stripes Day. Tuesday, October 20 will be Elementary Day – dress like you did in elementary with piggy tails and mixed-matched outfits. Wednesday, October 21 and Thursday, October 22 will be Color Wars – Seniors wear black, juniors wear white, sophomores wear blue, freshman wear red, 8th-graders wear yellow, 7th-graders wear green, and the staff wears orange. Friday, October 23 is the homecoming game with the royalty introduced at halftime.

Join Crookston Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) for an evening of outdoor fun at your local park  and meet other families in your neighborhood. ECFE will host the event at Carmen Park Monday, October 19 from 6-7 p.m. weather permitting and will be following COVID-19 guidelines.

The Polk County Commissioners will meet Tuesday, October 20 at 9:30 a.m. at the Polk County Transfer Station.

RiverVIew Health will be offering Flu Shot Clinics on Tuesday, October 20 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., and Wednesday, October 21 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.  If you wish to have your insurance billed, bring your insurance card. The flu shot is covered by Medicare and Medicaid but you must present those cards.  Buzzy shots for kids and adults who have aversion to shots will be available. Appointments are required. The Crookston Public Schools Negotiations Committee will meet with Instructional Assistants Tuesday, October 20 at 4:30 p.m. in the district office. No action will be taken at this meeting.

The Red Lake Falls Food Shelf will be open Wednesday, October 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Bring a non-perishable food or cash donation to the Otter Tail Power Company Customer Service Center in Crookston from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on October 21 and 22 and they’ll exchange your donation for up to 5 strings of LED Holiday lights. 

Safe Kids, Altru Health System and Brost Chevrolet will partner to hold a car seat checkup Thursday, October 22 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at Brost Chevrolet.  

The Golden Link will have a fundraiser dinner Thursday, October 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Celebrate Oktoberfest with a german meal including pork schnitzel, German potato salad, sauerkraut, pretzel roll, apfelkuchen and German music by Hansel & Gretel AKA Myron & Caroline Troite.

Cathedral Church Drive-In To-Go Harvest Festival at 702 Summit Avenue in Crookston will be Sunday, October 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A Fish Fry meal to go for $14 will be brought to you care for you to take home. There will be a Virtual Silent Auction, raffles, “Seek and Find” bingo, vehicle trivia, free kids activity bags, prizes, lively music and inflatable characters walking the parking lot. Crookston Fall Clean-Up week is October 26-October 30. Clean up items will be picked up on your regular garbage day. Compost materials  will not have to be in compost bags for this week only. Cleanup items should be separated into the following piles–garbage, clothing, cardboard, appliances, yard waste, furniture, metal items, demolition and tires. Branches must be cut in four foot lengths and bundled.  Items that will not be picked up are–video display items such as T.V.’s, and computers, concrete, batteries, partially full paint cans, chemicals, or large amounts of debri.

The Crookston High School Leo Club and the Crookston Police Department are hosting a drive by Halloween Night Food Drive Saturday, October 31 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.  in the west parking lot at the high school. Drop off your canned goods for the Care and Share Center and each child will receive a bag of candy. If unable to drive by, call Linda at 281-2144 or Darin at 281-3111 to have them picked up at your doorstep. 

Cobblestone Hotel and Suites, 2304 Sahlstrom Drive in Crookston, will have their 2nd Annual Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 31 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A prize will be awarded for the best decorated trunk. 

The Downtown Crookston Development Partnership (DCDP) will be hosting a “Historic Halloween Candy Hunt” on Saturday, October 31 from 5-7 p.m. downtown. They invite the community to “take a Halloween Night stroll” downtown to learn about the many historic buildings housed in Crookston with so many on the national register of historic places. Candy bowls will be set out in front of the buildings with historic facts posted that may have previous tenant information and features of the structures. Stops include places like the “Freaky Fournet”, “Terrifying Times”, “Creepy City Hall”, “Monster Montagues”, “Kooky Kiewel”, and the “Eerie Eagles.” They encourage people of all ages to share photos of their costumes that evening and their downtown candy hunt adventures to their Facebook page and ask that participants take only one piece of candy per stop so there’s enough for everyone.

Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine will hold its annual deer hunters meatball supper Saturday, November 7 for a free will donation. The meal will be curbside to-go from the west alley at the Erskine Community Center. Everyone is welcome.

CONTINUING ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Golden Link has biscuits and gravy Mondays at 8 a.m. $2 for one biscuit with gravy, $3 for two biscuits with gravy, $1 for a plain biscuit. 

The Crookston Gun Club is open for trap shooting on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:00 to dusk.

The Crookston Friends of the Library meet the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

The Crookston Library Board meets the first Wednesday of each month at 5:15. 

Twig and Branch Collection will be held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month running through October. Place the materials on your curbside. Branches must be cut in four-foot lengths and bundled in order for the crews to take them away. Any branches or tree trunks not cut to this length and bundled will be left for the owner to haul away. Twigs may be in boxes or bags. Individuals removing their diseased elm trees should call City Hall to schedule a pickup.

Polk County Public Health is available to answer questions about COVID 19, and help obtain essential services such as groceries, medications, and other daily items at 281-3385.  The phone is staffed Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. 

Hugo’s Family Marketplace is offering shopping for seniors and people with illnesses from 6-7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, and 8-9 a.m. Saturdays, and Sundays during the COVID-19 pandemic.
