CROOKSTON GIRL’S TENNIS BEATS PERHAM, IMPROVES TO 4-0

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Tennis team Improved to 4-0 on the year after beating the Perham Yellowjackets 6-1 in Section 8A matchup in Perham.  “It was a great day of tennis today,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “We saw a lot of close matches and when it came down to some pressure points the girls performed.  I was impressed with how the girls played and how they handled a little adversity by falling behind but coming back to win.  It was a very good day.”

The match started with four matches on the court with 3rd and 4th singles and 2nd and 3rd doubles on the court.  Crookston took a 3-0 lead after about an hour of play.  Halle Winjum won the third singles match 6-2, 6-0.  “Halle played well and was putting shots in tough spots,” said Coach Brekken. “She played better as the match went along and frustrated her opponent.”
Hannah Lindemoen hit the ball extremely well and won her fourth singles match 6-2, 6-2. “Hannah’s groundstrokes were strong and right over the net today,” said Coach Brekken. “It was good to see her build some confidence and play well for us today.”
The second doubles team of Brekken Tull and Emma Gunderson started a little slow and won the first set 6-3 before cruising to a 6-1 second set victory to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead after an hour of play. “They started a little slow,” said Coach Brekken. “They settled in and started to hit a lot of nice shots and played great the rest of the way.”
The third doubles team of Macy Fee and Abby Borowicz struggled in the first set and lost 6-1, but played much better the rest of the way and won the second set 7-5 forcing the third set.  In the third set, Fee and Borowicz won 6-4 to win the match, giving the Pirates the fourth victory to get the team victory with three matches left.  “They weren’t very good in the first set,” said Coach Brekken. “Once they started getting aggressive and they were getting excited and started playing much better and finished strong.”
The first doubles team of Halle Bruggeman and Emma Osborn played a solid all-around match for a 6-3, 6-3 victory.  “That was a good battle and was close early in the sets before the pulled away,” said Coach Brekken. “The girls played a solid match and didn’t make many mistakes and that was great to see.”
Hayden Winjum had a slow start in her second singles match and lost the first set 6-3 before bouncing back to win the second set 6-2 and then won the super tie-break third set 10-7 to give the Pirates a 6-0 lead.  “Hayden outlasted her opponent today,” said Coach Brekken. “She came out slow, but played steady the entire match and started hitting some nice shots and frustrated her opponent and the cool head of Hayden prevailed in the end.”
Catherine Tiedemann was the last Pirate on the court and lost the first set 7-5, bounced back to win the second set 6-3 to force a super tie-breaker third set and lost 11-9.  “Catherine played well today with two evenly matched players,” said Coach Brekken. “She hit a lot of nice balls and worked hard in a long match.”
