CROOKSTON GIRL’S HOCKEY SHUTOUT BY ORONO

The Crookston Pirates Girl’s hockey team failed to score for the second straight night in a 3-0 loss against the Orono Spartans in a non-Section game played at the Crookston Sports Center.

Orono opened the first period with a goal just 4:34 into the game. With the Spartans on the powerplay, Gabriella Norris sent the puck to Molly Martini, who sent a cross-ice pass to Ilya Ryskamp, giving Orano a 1-0 lead. Crookston managed two shots in the first period as the Spartans took a 1-0 lead into intermission. “We switched some things up from last night,” noted Crookston head coach Tim Moe. “We moved Dillynn Wallace back to defense where she played in the youth program. We moved her to get four kids defensively that have confidence back there. I thought she played outstanding tonight in a situation where she wasn’t expecting that coming into the game.”

Both teams managed seven shots in the second period, with Crookston goaltender Grace Koshney and Orono goaltender Anna Lisle both keeping clean sheets in the scoreless second period. “That was just fantastic hockey,” said Moe. “I told the kids after the period, ‘that might be the best period of hockey I’ve seen out a Crookston girl’s team in many years here.’ That’s a positive thing to build on. Hopefully, we can break through here at some point.”

In the third period, Crookston managed just five shots while Orono peppered Koshney with shots. With 12:54 to play Sydney DeCubellis fired a shot from the end line. The puck trickled off the skate of the Pirates’ goaltender into the net, doubling the Spartans lead. With 7:11 to play, Iyla Ryskamp scored off assists from Gabriella Norris and Kaeli Koopman, giving Orono a 3-0 lead. Spartans goaltender Anna Lisle made 14 saves in the game to preserve the shutout as Orono secured a 3-0 win. “I think we did a much better job tonight, overall,” summarized Moe. “We were getting opportunities and shooting the puck on net. Grace Koshney played an excellent game for us. She really stepped up after a tough game last night. Overall, you’re proud of the effort. You wish you could score a goal. I see it in practice. We have some of those skills, but we have to find a way to bury a puck at some time here.”

Crookston falls to 0-2. The Pirates will play their third straight game tomorrow night when Crookston hosts Delano-Rockford at 2:00 P.M. Orono improves to 3-2.
