The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Volleyball team rallied back after dropping the first two sets, winning the third set 25-23, before falling to Warren-Alvarado-Oslo 3-1 in a Section 8A match played at the Crookston High School Gymnasium.
In the opening set, WAO jumped out to a 6-2 lead following a kill by Lily Bayne. A Rylee Solheim kill brought Crookston within 8-4, before a Ponies’ attacking error trimed the Pirates’ deficit down to 8-5. Jasmin Hanson spiked a kill trimming Crookston’s deficit down to 9-7. A Lily Bayne kill regained an 11-7 lead for the visitors before a Rylie Mortimer spiked gave the Ponies a 13-8 lead. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo continued to pull away with the first set with a Shelby Durand kill helping the Ponies close out a 25-15 win in set one. “It was an emotional night,” noted Crookston head coach Ashley Stopa. “I think that impacts are ‘go’ versus our ‘wait, and see what’s going on.’ It was matter of just finding the six that gelled at that particular time.”
In the second set a Shelby Durand kill put Warren-Alvarado-Oslo lead to 8-4. A Rylie Mortimer kill followed by a Crookston attacking error giving the visitors an 11-4 lead. Later in the set, Shelby Durand served an ace giving WAO a 15-5 advatnage. Jasmin Hanson hit a kill cutting Crookston’s deficit down to 16-8, but the Ponies continued to pull away taking the second set 25-14.
To open the third set, Danielle Boyle, Kasey Cwikla, and Allie Love hit consecutive kills pushing the Pirates ahead 5-1. Back-to-back Shelby Durand kills followed by a Kylie Hanson block tied the set at 7-7. Crookston responed by taking the next two points including a Libby Salentine ace pushing the Pirates ahead 9-7. WAO stormed back before three-straight Crookston attacking errors gave the Ponies an 18-15 lead. A Libby Salentine kill brought the Pirates back within two before a Danielle Boyle ace trimmed Crookston’s deficit down to one. Kasey Cwikla spiked a kill tying the set at 18-18 before another Boyle ace gave the Pirates a 19-18 lead. Crookston’s lead grew to 22-18 before a Kasey Cwikla kill extended the match clinching the Pirates’ third set win 25-23. “They kept pushing,” explained Stopa. “I think a big impact was how loud we started to get towards the end. We never give up. We don’t give up on any balls. The girls were finding some places to hit. They were listening where to go. The hard part was that our blocking was off today. We just never got the timing on that.”
Warren-Alvarado-Oslo jumped out to a 7-3 lead before a Libby Salentine kill brought the Pirates within 7-4. Another ace served by Danielle Boyle trimmed Crookston’s deficit down to 7-5. However, the Ponies proved to be too mush as a Rylie Mortimer kill gave Warren-Alvarado-Oslo an 18-8 lead. Crookston rallied all the way back to within 23-22 following a Kacey Cwikla kill, but Mortimer and Lily Bayne closed out the match with consecutive kills as WAO won the fourth set 25-22. “It was senior and I think there was a lot of emotions going on,” summarized Stopa. “All the girls did a good job. Our serving was very consistent tonight. Our errors were limtied, but we still have a few more errors that we need to brush off to get that ball to the other side.”
Crookston falls to 2-18 on the year. The Pirates return to the court on Thursday when Crookston hosts Roseau at 7:30 P.M. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo improves to 10-12.
