The Crookston Eagles will have bar bingo with a $500 final blackout jackpot and meat raffles with meat packages from B & E Meats tonight at 6:00 p.m.. The kitchen will be serving taco in a bag for $5 along with other fried foods from 5:30 to 7:30. 

A free screening of “Paul, Apostle of Christ” will be held tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium at Sacred Heart School, East Grand Forks. The event, sponsored by the Office of Formation in Discipleship, is open to the public and no registration is required.

The East Grand Forks Valley Corn Maize will be open weekends through October 20. This year’s theme is “Getting Lost with the Dinosaurs.” There is a 15 acre corn maze, family activities and concession stand. On October 5, the Office of Formation in Discipleship is sponsoring a second Convocation of Parish Leaders at Sacred Heart School, East Grand Forks, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Lunch will be served.

The Crookston Fire Department Open House will be Saturday, October 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Bring the whole family and have a great time at the Fire Hall. 

Crookston Boy Scout Troop 41 is planning a burgers and beets fundraiser for Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the John Deere Parking Lot.   A single patty burger, chips, and pop is $5. A double patty burger, chips, and pop is $7. If beet trucks aren’t running the burgers will be rescheduled. 

The rifle range at the Crookston Gun Club, located west of Highway 75 just north of UMC,  will be open to the public on Saturdays in October from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4:00 p.m. Targets will be furnished.  The range will not be open if it is raining or snowing. Crookston’s Annie Fitzgerlad will have a concert Saturday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium at UMC with special guest M French.  Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, $10 for students at the door and can be purchased at www.anniefitzgerald.com

There will be a Baby Sign and Early Literacy class for parents and caregivers of children ages birth to 2 years and 11 months on Tuesday, October 8, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Crookston Public Library. Participants will learn basic baby signs and literacy tips to develop language through reading books. This is a free, one time class, the deadline to register is the Thursday prior to the class. The Fertile Library will have early out activities for youth on Wednesday, October 9 from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. creating air-powered cars to race.  This event is appropriate for youth in kindergarten through eight grade, although those ages 10 and younger will need to be assisted by an adult. This event is offered free of charge.

JAM TIME, which stands for Jesus and Me, Together in Motion Everyday,  will be Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Hope Church in Fertile. 

The Crookston High School Powder Puff football game will be Wednesday, October 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Crookston Sports Center. 

The Erskine Grace Lutheran Church NALCW will have their annual auction on Wednesday, October 9.  Events begin at 6:30 p.m. with a free pie social, auction at 7:00 p.m. Baked goods, canned goods, arts, crafts, plants, lefse, and more will be available at the auction. 

The Fisher American Legion Wednesday Night Special for October 9 is a Rueben sandwich and fries for $8.

The 20th Annual United Way Soup and Chili Cook-off and Chocolate Extravaganza will be Thursday, October 10th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Crookston High School Commons. Cost is $5 per person, five years and younger are free. Vote for your favorites and enjoy soup and chili, plus new this year, Raffle Prizes. 

RiverView Health will host a four hour CPR class at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, October 10 at the RiverView Home Care Building located at 721 South Minnesota Street. The Crookston High School Homecoming will be Friday, October 11. At 8:15 a.m. the homecoming candidates will go to Highland, Cathedral and Washington schools.  There will be a pep fest at 10:00 a.m., the players walk around the school at 3:00 p.m., the game vs. Breckinridge at 6:00 p.m., and the homecoming dance at 9:00 p.m.

Bethany Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls will have their 71 Annual Scandinavian Smorgasbord on Saturday, October 19 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Menu includes Swedish meatballs and gravy over mashed potatoes, lutefisk casserole, sot suppe, flat brod, lefse, rommegrot, coleslaw, baked beans, deviled eggs, and homemade breads. Desserts include krumkaka, rosettes and specialty cookies.  There will also be a Candy Room. Tickets at the door are $15 for adults. Children under the age of 12 are $5. City of Crookston Fall Clean Up Week is October 21 – October 25.  Cleanup items will be picked up only on your regular pick up day. Information about what will and will not be picked up can be found here

The Crookston Community Halloween Party, for fourth graders and younger and a responsible adult, will be Saturday, October 26 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Crookston National Guard Armory. Wear your costume and join them for fun, games and a spooktacular spook house. The party is free, but please bring a canned food item to help kick off the Crookston High School Leo Clubs annual food drive. 

Trinity Lutheran Church in Fisher will have their Harvest Dinner on Sunday, October 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, kids ages 3 to 11 is $5, under 3 is free. Menu includes pork loin, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, squash, green beans, rolls, dessert, and a beverage. 

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, next to Hugo’s in Crookston,  would like to invite the community to a free showing of the movie “I Can Only Imagine”  on Sunday, October 27 at 3:00 p.m. There will be popcorn and soft drinks.

Images of history, viewed through the eyes of a photographer, tell the human story. “Roots of the Red River Valley,” a pictorial history of the 1937 sugar beet harvest, will be on display at the University of Minnesota Crookston from Monday, November 4 through Saturday, November 9. A gallery opening will be held on Monday, November 4 at 7 p.m. in Bede Ballroom, Sargeant Student Center. Daily hours for the gallery are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day except Wednesday, November 6 when it will close to the public at 5 p.m.  A special Thursday Commons presentation and panel discussion about the pictorial history will take place on Thursday, November 7 at noon in Kiehle Auditorium. Parking permits are not required.

Participants will learn basic baby signs and literacy tips to develop language through reading books. Branch and twig collection will be held the second and fourth Mondays of each month running May through October.  Place the materials on your curbside. Branches must be cut into four-foot lengths and bundled in order for the crews to take them away.  Any branches or tree trunks not cut to this length and bundled will be left for the owner to haul away. Twigs may be in boxes or bags. Individuals removing their diseased elm trees should call City Hall to schedule pickup.

ECFE’s Unplug and Play for ages birth to Kindergarten entrance is held the first and second Tuesday of each month October through May from 5:30-6:30 at Washington School. A variety of equipment will be available. Class is free and registration is not required.

ECFE’s Pop In and Play for ages birth to Kindergarten entrance is the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. September through April at Washington School. Play in the gym using equipment designed for young children. Class is free and registration is not required. 

Fertile Library will host a knitting group each Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  All are welcome and the event is free of charge. 

The Crookston Public Library hosts WOW: What’s on Wednesday? the second Wednesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. for children ages 7-12 with crafts, activities and more. 

JAM TIME, which stands for Jesus and Me, Together in Motion Every Day, is a new, non-denominational children’s ministry program to help kids dig into the Bible and grow their relationship with the Lord. The program will be Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Hope Church in Fertile, starting in October. All children, Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to attend! Each night at JAM TIME, children will engage in a variety of small group and large group activities that reinforce a key Bible point and verse for the week. Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., preschool children and their caregivers are invited to Storytime at the Crookston Public Library. Each week, they’ll explore a different theme through stories, songs, finger plays, flannel board stories, and a craft. No pre-registration is required, but they ask childcare providers and other groups to call ahead to ensure there will be adequate supplies at 281-4522.

Riverview Health’s monthly Type 2 Diabetes Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of every month from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at RiverView Health in Meeting Room 1.  The group is led by RiverView Dietitian Darcy Larson, RD, LD and Kelsey Billing, RN, BSN. The Type 2 meetings are open to anyone with Type 2 diabetes and their family members.  New members are always welcome.
