CROOKSTON LEGION SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER FROM FARGO POST 400

The Crookston American Legion Post 20 Baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep against Fargo Post 400 on Tuesday winning game one 5-4 on a walk-off hit by Brooks Butt and holding onto an early lead to win game two 4-3.

Game 1 –
Fargo jumped out to a first-inning lead when Bryce Atrius would single with one out and move to second.  He came into score when the next batter reached on a throwing error before being forced out a second trying to advance.  A ground out would end the inning and Fargo led 1-0.

Crookston went in order the first two innings while Joey Doda was able to pitch around a one-double in the second before sending Fargo down in order in the third.  In the home half of the inning, Cade DeLeon drew a one-out walk, followed by a single from Gunner Gunderson.  Following an infield fly, Doda would walk to load the bases before Alex LaFrance was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run making it 1-1 through three.

Crookston would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Brady Butt drew a lead off walk.  Following a fly out, Blake Fee singled moving Butt to third to put runners on the corners.  DeLeon hit a sacrifice fly to score Butt giving Crookston a 2-1 lead.  Blake Fee would also come around to score on a pitch that got to the backstop and Crookston led 3-1.

Fargo reclaimed the lead in the fifth when with one out Victor Czar reached on an error and scored on a double by Ethan Claus to cut the lead to one at 3-2.  A single by Atrius put runners on the corners before Atrius stole second and the throw sailed from the catcher scoring Claus and moving Atrius to third making it 3-3.  A double would score Atrius and Fargo led 4-3.  “Joey pitched well,” said coach Kent Shafer.  “We made a couple of errors and gave them a few runs.”

Crookston rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Jade Selzer reached on catcher’s interference to lead off the inning.  Following a strikeout, Alex LaFrance would strikeout but reach base on a wild pitch.  Back-to-Back walks forced in Selzer to tie the game 4-4 with one out and bases loaded.  Brooks Butt then singled to center for the walk-off win. “We didn’t do a lot of hitting in game one,” said Shafer.  “But Brooks was able to come up with the big hit to win the game.”

Game 2 –
Crookston would take an early lead in game two when Blake Fee and Brady Butt picked up singles to open the inning.  The runners moved up on a balk and Fee would score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

Crookston extended their lead in the third as Ashton Larson and Jake Miller opened the inning with singles.  A sacrifice bunt by Walker Winjum put the runners on second and third with one out.  Gavin Salem would single to score Larson to make it 2-0 before Blake Fee hit a sacrifice fly scoring Miller and giving Post 20 a 3-0 lead after three.  “We hit the ball much better in game two,” said coach Kent Shafer.  “Blake had a nice game getting a couple runs in and getting two hits.”

Fargo would get their first run of the game in the fourth as Mitch Runcorn reached on a single.  Following a fly out, Caden Grat reached on a fielder’s choice that forced out Runcorn and moved to second on an error.  Ben Crawford would single to score Grat making it 3-1.

Crookston pushed their lead back to three in the fifth when Winjum drew a one-out walk and stole second before scoring on an RBI double by Fee to make it 4-1.

Miller, Crookston’s starting pitcher, ran into trouble in the sixth as he hit the lead off batter who moved to second on a wild pitch.  A ground out was followed by a Crawford single to put runners on the corners. Thane Kruk then singled home a run to make it 4-2 advancing Crawford to second.  Kruk was forced out at second when Ethan Claus hit into a fielder’s choice but the throw to turn the double play missed its mark allowing Crawford to score from second to make it 4-3 when Claus advanced to second.  On walk put the go-ahead run on base before Miller got the final batter he’d face to ground out to third.  Brooks Butt came on in the seventh to pitch a 1-2-3 inning for the save.  “We let Miller kind of work out of a jam in the sixth,” said Shafer. “He was maybe getting a little tired and an error hurt that inning but was able to get the job done.”

Crookston improves to 4-2 and will host a doubleheader against Stephen-Argyle Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Jim Karn Field.
