The Crookston Pirates Wrestling team finished eighth place out of 16 teams at the Thief River Falls National Guard/Prowler Invitational held at the Ralph Englestad Arena in Thief River Falls.
Crookston had one champion with Zach Brown winning all three of his matches at 113 pounds.  The Pirates had eight wrestlers place. “There was definitely some high-quality wrestling going on today,” said Pirate Coach Wes Hanson. “Our wrestlers came away with some big wins and beat some of the bigger schools and that was fun.”

Zach Brown (the #3 ranked wrestler at 113) was the lone Pirate champion and he continues his stellar season as he won all three of his matches at 113 pounds.  He won the first round by a pin in 64 seconds.  In the second round, he won by an 8-2 decision and in the championship, he won by a 10-1 major decision. “It was really a great tournament for Zach,” said Coach Hanson. “He was excited to wrestle in the tournament and to compete and he had a complete effort.  He did so many things well. His positioning on his feet, his countering, his riding and even in the finals he was able to get a lateral drop for five points in the finals and got the major decision and that was huge.”

Lukas Meier finished fourth place at 152 pounds.  He had a tech fall in his first round match for a victory and won his second match by a pin before he lost to a couple of very good opponents including a Bemidji kid that is ranked #8 at 160 in Class AAA and a Thief River Falls kid that is ranked #8 at 160 in Class AA.  “Lukas had a couple of good matches to start the day and showed some pretty good techniques,” said Coach Hanson. “He ran into some very good wrestlers and he got behind 4-0 in both matches and it was tough to get yourself back into those matches.”

Ethan Bowman finished fourth place at 106 pounds with a first-round victory and lost the next two matches. “He beat a good kid in the opening round and did a lot of good things today, but ran into some tough competition,” said Coach Hanson. “Overall it was a pretty good tournament.”

Nolan Dans finished fourth place at 120 pounds. He won two matches and lost two matches.  “In his second match he had a nice pin and wrestled well,” said Coach Hanson. “The fifth-place finish for Nolan was good, especially at this tournament.”

Damian Hodgson won three matches and lost two and finished seventh place.  “He wrestled well and lost to the eventual champion and the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament,” said Coach Hanson. “170 was a deep weight class and wrestled some solid matches and I was proud how he was able to extend his leads in his matches.”

Cameron Weiland, Braxton Volker, and Ethan Boll all finished eighth place.  “Cameron Weiland had a couple of nice wins and had some exciting come from behind wins.  Ethan Boll showed some nice things today and had some explosive moves,” said Coach Hanson. “Braxton fought out there hard and did a lot of things well.”

Crookston will have a week of practice before they travel to the Grand Rapids Tournament on Saturday, January 26.
