Valley Corn Maize in East Grand Forks is closed this weekend. 

The Crookston Gun Club will not be open this weekend. 

The UMC Cheer Club Cheer Camp for children ages 4-18 on Saturday, October 12 has been canceled. 

The Crookston Eagles will have bar bingo today at 3:30 p.m., $400 must go.  Dinner will be served from 6;00 to 7:00 p.m. with choice of Potato Dumplings for $10 or Walleye for $15.  Takeout is available. 

Agassiz Environmental Learning Center in Fertile will have their Haunted Trail every Saturday from dusk to midnight the month of October. Admission is $10 and one hundred percent of the proceeds go to the Learning Center. 

There will be a free will Pancake and French Toast breakfast to support at 5th-grade Terrific Kids program and the 7th/8th-grade Builders Club on Sunday, October 13 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Crookston Masonic Lodge. 

Wesley United Methodist Church in Crookston will celebrate their 140 Anniversary on Sunday, October 13 with an Open House from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and music at 1:30. Dessert pizza from  the “Bread of Life” wood fired oven, ice cream and a beverage will be served. 

All Lake Agassiz Regional Library (LARL) branches and LINK sites will be closed on Monday, October 14 for staff training. Regular hours of operation will resume Tuesday, October 15. 

The Crookston Lions will meet Monday, October 14 at 12:00 p.m. at Crookston Inn.

The Golden Link will have cards Monday, October 14 at 12:45 p.m., greeting cards at 1:00 p.m., exercise class at 2:00 p.m., and collector’s club at 6:30 p.m.

Crookston City Council will meet Monday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chamber. The Ways and Means committee will meet immediately following.  At the conclusion of the open agenda the meeting will close to discuss labor negotiations pursuant to the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act – Statute 13D.03, Subd. 1 (B). 

The Knights of Columbus Council #1216 will have a meeting Monday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the clubroom at Crookston Cathedral.  Members are encouraged to attend.

The Polk County Commissioners will meet Tuesday, October 15 at 9:30 a.m. in the Commissioner’s Room at the Polk County Government Center. 

Hospice of the Red River Valley’s support group Grief Journeys for Adults will meet Tuesday, October 15 from 10:30 a.m. – noon at the Crookston Public Library.  This support group is for adults 18 years and older who have experienced a loss through death. 

The Crookston School District will have an informational meeting on the upcoming referendum on Tuesday, October 15 at noon at DaRoos. 

The University of Minnesota Crookston will host a presentation titled “Great Conservationist” by Larry Nielsen a professor emeritus of natural resources at North Carolina State University onTuesday, October 15 at noon in the Peterson Classroom in Heritage Hall. All are welcome to attend and parking is available in Lot G.

The Crookston Public Library’s STEMsational Tuesday on October 15 for ages 7-12 is from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and will hone science skills by experimenting with extracting strawberry DNA. 

Highland and Washington School Parent Teacher Conferences will be held Tuesday, October 15 from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, October 16 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. There will also be a Scholastic Book Fair. 

Crookston High School will have a presentation Tuesday, October 15 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium titled “It’s FAFSA Time”.  Information will be provided on the FAFSA, and there will be an opportunity to complete the FAFSA in the computer lab with help from staff.  Families should bring their 2017 or 2018 taxes.  

The Crookston Public Library will host author Leif Enger discussing his latest book “Virgil Wander” on Tuesday, October 15 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The event is made possible due to funding from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Crookston High School will have a presentation titled “Real Talk about Paying for College and the High School Timeline” Wednesday October 16 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. and again from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.  Topics include paying for college (how to help your student be debt free), college budgetings, and the high school timeline/graduation requirements. 

Villa St. Vincent and The Summit will host a presentation by Crookston Police Chief Paul Biermaier on Wednesday, October 16 at 2:00 p.m. title “Recovering from Identity Theft”. The presentation will be held in the SUMMIT third floor dining room.  Pie, ice cream, and coffee will be served. 

 In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, RiverView Health is offering, “Be a Friend, Bring a Friend’’, free breast cancer screening events for area women. Women are encouraged to register in pairs for either the October 16h or 30 screening events taking place in RiverView’s Diagnostic Imaging Department. From 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. each evening, free 3D mammography screenings will be provided, along with mini facials by Rejuv Salon. Appetizers and wine will be served. The events are made possible with funding through the RiverView Foundation from donations by the Tee it Up “Fore’’ Breast Health Committee and the Crookston Fraternal Order of the Eagles and Auxiliary.

The Fertile Library’s Resolute Readers Book Club will meet Wednesday, October 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the the library to discuss the book “An American Marriage” by Tayari Jones.

The East Grand Forks Valley Corn Maize will be open weekends through October 20. This year’s theme is “Getting Lost with the Dinosaurs.” There is a 15 acre corn maze, family activities and concession stand. The rifle range at the Crookston Gun Club, located west of Highway 75 just north of UMC,  will be open to the public on Saturdays in October from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4:00 p.m. Targets will be furnished.  The range will not be open if it is raining or snowing. Rodnes Lutheran Church will have their Annual Fall Auction Sale on Saturday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. Items to include handwork, crafts, baked goods, lefse, jams, jellies, pickles, and various other things. Northwest Minnesota Synod Fall Gathering for Women of the ELCA “Serving Up Love” Pine to Valley Cluster 3 will be held at the Climax Lutheran Church Saturday, October 26. A brunch will be served from  9:00-10:00 a.m. and the program begins at 10:00 a.m. Shana Williams will present on the “Backpack Program and Deaconess.” Registration fee for the day, payable at the door, is $10, which includes lunch. Daycare will be available.

The Crookston Community Saturday Art Class “Kids N Canvas Halloween Party” for ages 6-13 will be Saturday, October 26 from 10:00-11:30 in the Washington Elementary School cafeteria. Instructor is Jolene Beiswenger and the cost is $20 which includes a 11 x 14 canvas painting, snack and drink. Aprons will be provided, wear paint clothes. To register call 281-5078. 

The Crookston Community Halloween Party, for fourth graders and younger and a responsible adult, will be Saturday, October 26 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Crookston National Guard Armory. Wear your costume and join them for fun, games and a spooktacular spook house. The party is free, but please bring a canned food item to help kick off the Crookston High School Leo Clubs annual food drive.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Altru Clinic in Crookston will be offering free clinical breast exams on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. throughout the month of October.  Breast exams are encouraged for women over the age of 25. One in eight U.S. women will develop breast cancer and a clinical exam is part of your overall breast health. To schedule your free breast exam, please call 218.281.9100.

Highland PTO bingo is Tuesday, October 29 at 6:00 p.m. at Highland School.  Doors open at 5:15 p.m. with bingo, food, raffles, popcorn, and door prizes. 

UMC will host University of Minnesota professor on neuroscience Dr. Mark Thomas for a presentation on drug addiction in the brain in Kiehle Auditorium from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 29.  Everyone is welcome and parking is recommended in Lot G. He will also have a round table with law enforcement on Wednesday, October 30 at 10:00 a.m. and with health care providers at 1:00 p.m. 

The Golden Link will have cribbage Wednesday, October 30 at 9:30 a.m., cards at 12:45 p.m., the UMC retirees and the free movie – The Hustle – at 1:30 p.m.

In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, RiverView Health is offering, “Be a Friend, Bring a Friend’’, free breast cancer screening event for area women. Women are encouraged to register in pairs for  the October 30th screening event taking place in RiverView’s Diagnostic Imaging Department. From 5 to 7 pm each evening, free 3D mammography screenings will be provided, along with mini facials by Rejuv Salon. Appetizers and wine will be served. The events are made possible with funding through the RiverView Foundation from donations by the Tee it Up “Fore’’ Breast Health Committee and the Crookston Fraternal Order of the Eagles and Auxiliary.

Crookston High School applications for the Triple ‘A’ Award (Seniors) and EXCEL Award (Juniors) are due by Thursday, October 31.  Applications should be turned into Mrs. Snyder in the counseling office. Applications can be found by going to www.mshsl.org under the recognition tab.

Images of history, viewed through the eyes of a photographer, tell the human story. “Roots of the Red River Valley,” a pictorial history of the 1937 sugar beet harvest, will be on display at the University of Minnesota Crookston from Monday, November 4 through Saturday, November 9. A gallery opening will be held on Monday, November 4 at 7 p.m. in Bede Ballroom, Sargeant Student Center. Daily hours for the gallery are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day except Wednesday, November 6 when it will close to the public at 5 p.m.  A special Thursday Commons presentation and panel discussion about the pictorial history will take place on Thursday, November 7 at noon in Kiehle Auditorium. Parking permits are not required.

Tuesday, November 5 is Election Day. 

The University of Minnesota Crookston Campus will host their Torch and Shield  and Donor Recognition Event on November 6 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Kiehle Auditorium and Brown Dining Hall. The reception will be at 5:00, social at 6:00 p.m. and dinner to follow. 

The Polk County Commissioners will meet Tuesday, November 5 at 8:00 a.m. in the Commissioner’s Room at the Polk County Government Center. 

Villa St. Vincent and The Summit will hold a Veterans’ Breakfast Thursday, November 7 from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. in the main Summit dining room with a free meal for all local veterans and their guest.   RSVPs are not necessary but are appreciated, call 218-281-0761.

Hospice of the Red River Valley’s support group Grief Journeys for Adults will meet Tuesday, November 5 from 10:30 a.m. – noon at the Crookston Public Library.  This support group is for adults 18 years and older who have experienced a loss through death. 

There will be a Baby Sign and Early Literacy class for parents and caregivers of children ages birth to 2 years and 11 months on Tuesday, November 12, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Crookston Public Library. Participants will learn basic baby signs and literacy tips to develop language through reading books. The Crookston Fuel Company will have their Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 7 at noon at the Crookston Inn and Convention Center. There will be a review of the financial operations and conditions of the company, election of directors and such other business as may properly come before the meeting. Lunch will be served.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston will have their Fall Harvest and Meatball Supper on Sunday, November 17, from 4:00 to 7:00 in the Fellowship Hall. The menu includes Scandinavian meatballs and gravy, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, salad, rolls, beverages, apple and pumpkin desserts. The Bake Sale will open at 3:30 p.m.  Cost is $12 for adults, children 5-10 are $7, age 4 and under are free. Take-outs are available. Hosted by the Trinity’s Women of the ELCA.

Please use Carroll Street to access the north entrance to the Altru Clinic parking lot.  Altru Clinic would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. 

Branch and twig collection will be held the second and fourth Mondays of each month running May through October.  Place the materials on your curbside. Branches must be cut into four-foot lengths and bundled in order for the crews to take them away.  Any branches or tree trunks not cut to this length and bundled will be left for the owner to haul away. Twigs may be in boxes or bags. Individuals removing their diseased elm trees should call City Hall to schedule pickup.

The Crookston Public Library hosts baby bounce for ages birth to 2 years old the second and fourth Tuesday of every month October through May at 10:00 a.m. with songs, stories, flannel board, action poems for infants and toddlers plus their caregivers. Registration is not required.

ECFE’s Unplug and Play for ages birth to Kindergarten entrance is held the first and second Tuesday of each month October through May from 5:30-6:30 at Washington School. A variety of equipment will be available. Class is free and registration is not required.

ECFE’s Pop In and Play for ages birth to Kindergarten entrance is the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. September through April at Washington School. Play in the gym using equipment designed for young children. Class is free and registration is not required. 

Fertile Library will host a knitting group each Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  All are welcome and the event is free of charge. 

The Crookston Public Library hosts WOW: What’s on Wednesday? the second Wednesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. for children ages 7-12 with crafts, activities and more. 

JAM TIME, which stands for Jesus and Me, Together in Motion Every Day, is a new, non-denominational children’s ministry program to help kids dig into the Bible and grow their relationship with the Lord. The program will be Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Hope Church in Fertile, starting in October. All children, Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to attend! Each night at JAM TIME, children will engage in a variety of small group and large group activities that reinforce a key Bible point and verse for the week. Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., preschool children and their caregivers are invited to Storytime at the Crookston Public Library. Each week, they’ll explore a different theme through stories, songs, finger plays, flannel board stories, and a craft. No pre-registration is required, but they ask childcare providers and other groups to call ahead to ensure there will be adequate supplies at 281-4522.

Riverview Health’s monthly Type 2 Diabetes Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of every month from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at RiverView Health in Meeting Room 1.  The group is led by RiverView Dietitian Darcy Larson, RD, LD and Kelsey Billing, RN, BSN. The Type 2 meetings are open to anyone with Type 2 diabetes and their family members.  New members are always welcome.
