The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team had too many errors and the Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal Titans took advantage in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-23) victory in a match played at the Crookston High School Gymnasium.

Crookston started the match going on a 4-1 run with one of the points coming off a Kasey Cwikla kill. “We were loud early,” said Pirate Coach Ashley Stopa. “We were talking and came out with some energy.” NCE/UH battle back to tie the match at 6-6 taking advantage of a couple of Pirate service errors. Halfway through the set, NCE/UH had a 12-10 lead and went on a 5-1 run behind kills from Brianna Thompson Corie Peterick for a 17-11 lead. The Titans continued to pull away with some nice kills from Madison Thornton and cruised to a 25-15 victory to take a 1-0 lead. “We struggled on our serves and hit them too hard,” said Coach Stopa. “We were moving well but struggled hitting the ball. I think in general we got too excited and hit the ball too hard.”

NCE/UH jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Crookston slowly chipped away at the deficit and tied the set at 8-8. Crookston served into the net and Makenna Anderson and Ryah Opsahl had back-to-back kills to spark a 10-3 run for an 18-11 lead. The teams played even the rest of the way, but Crookston had too many errors and the Titans won the set 25-16 for a 2-0 lead. “We missed a lot of serves again,” said Coach Stopa. “Our rotation would go fast and their setter did a nice job of moving the ball around too.”

Crookston jumped out to a 3-1 lead to start the set, but NCE/UH bounced back and scored the next five points behind a couple of aces, a Peterick kill and a Brianna Thompson block/kill and the Titans had a 6-3 lead. Crookston bounced back with a Jasmin Hanson kill and ace and after the Titans hit the ball out of bounds the set was tied at 6-6. “We started getting some serves in,” said Coach Stopa. “The girls kept working hard and it started to pay off.” Crookston regained the lead on a Titan hitting error and build a 13-8 lead behind an Amelia Overgaard ace and two Rylee Solheim aces. The Titans answered with an 8-3 run to tie the set at 16-16 before taking the lead on back-to-back aces from Makenna Anderson and NCE/UH built a 23-19 lead. Crookston received a point on a Titan hitting error, Jasmin Hanson had a kill and Kasey Cwikla had back-to-back aces to tie the set at 23-23. The Titans finished the match with two big kills from Makenna Anderson to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-0. “We played our best set of the night in the third set. I was happy with how hard the girls played until the last point,” said Coach Stopa. “We had a lot of energy, the bench was loud, but they came up with some nice plays at the end.”

Crookston drops to 1-5 on the year and will host Fertile-Beltrami on Monday night. Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal improves to 1-3 on the year.
