CROOKSTON PIRATE BOY’S SOCCER SHUTOUT BY PELICAN RAPIDS

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Soccer team was tested early and often in a 9-0 loss against the Pelican Rapids Vikings in a match played at the Crookston High School Soccer Fields.

FIRST HALF-
Pelican Rapids utilized a methodical attack with an effective combination of passes. Just over seven minutes into the game, Oscar Pedroza found open grass and dribbled past the Crookston defense and fired a shot into the net giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Jesus Moreno scored Pelican Rapids second goal of the match 10:44 into the first half doubling the visitor’s advantage. Khadar Ibrahim took a pass from Josh Urbano and struck the net with a shot putting Pelican Rapids ahead 3-0. Sebastian Centeno scored the fourth goal of the game and 48-seconds later Oscar Diaz scored giving Pelican Rapids a 5-0 lead to take into halftime. “We had some mistakes defensively,” explained Crookston head coach Lon Boike. “We’re not keeping our heads up, and that’s probably one of the biggest things we need to work on. We gave them too many easy looks as well.”

SECOND HALF –
Alan Villagomez resumed the scoring with an assist from Jesus Moreno, giving the visitors a 6-0 lead. Oscar Diaz made it 7-0 with a goal 1:20 later. Mohamed Ahmed took a pass from Josh Urbano and shot it into the net making it 8-0 Pelican Rapids. Ahmed closed out the scoring in the 69th minute with his second goal closing out Pelican Rapids 9-0 win. “First off that’s a really good team,” summarized Boike. “Our hope was to put the pressure on them, and of course we didn’t. We did play better in the second half, but for me, it comes back to defense. We’ve got to keep the ball out of our end and be better at seeing what’s going on around you. I think we make it a little harder than we have to some times. It’s a little frustrating for us. I had anticipated maybe a better, closer match, but Pelican Rapids played a lot better than they did when we played them down there, but give our guys credit to, they worked awfully hard out there, and I know they’re frustrated.”

Crookston drops to 0-4. The Pirates return to the pitch on Thursday when Crookston hosts Jamestown at 4 P.M. on the Crookston High School Soccer Fields. Pelican Rapids improves to 6-0-1.
