CROOKSTON GIRL’S HOCKEY SHUTOUT AT THIEF RIVER FALLS

The Crookston Pirates Girl’s hockey team registered just four shots on goal in a 7-0 loss against the Thief River Falls Prowlers in a Section 8A game played at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls.

Thief River Falls dominated possession time in their offensive zone in the first period. The Prowlers broke through for an opening goal with 8:34 left in the first period when Khloe Lund received a pass from Daniella Niebuhr and slapped a shot past Crookston goaltender Grace Koshney giving the Prowlers a 1-0 lead. Just 1:22 later, Thier River Falls scored its second goal when Katie Nelson shot the puck over the glove of Koshney into the roof of the net giving the Prowlers a 2-0 lead after one period despite Koshney’s 16 first period saves. “They just break you down,” explained Crookston head coach Tim Moe. “When the play is in your zone for 85%-90% of that first period you just can’t hold up that long. They were able to break us down and get a few opportunities. I know on that second goal it was simply a big-time screen in front of the net. Grace couldn’t see it.”

Thief River Falls added to their lead early and often throughout the second period. Katie Nelson scored her second straight goal to open the second period with 13:15 still to play in the middle period. With 11:09  to play in the period, Khloe Lund scored her second goal off an assist from Marryn Dalager giving the Prowlers a 4-0 lead. On Thief River Falls lone powerplay of the night, Shelby Breiland set up Hannah Magnusson for a one-timer slapped into the net giving the hosts a 5-0 lead. The advantage grew to 6-0 before the end of the period with 3:23 to play when Shelby Breiland took a pass from Ava Sturgeon and put it into the net to secure Crookston’s 6-0 lead after two periods of play. “I thought, for the most part, we had more opportunities in the second period, but that probably led to a few more opportunities on the rush side back to our end,” noted Moe. “They were able to score some off of that. They were constantly moving and ended up losing some people. On Khloe Lund’s goal, she did a fantastic job moving down because our wing wasn’t covering her very well. She just went in between the circles and got a shot over Grace’s (Koshney) glove.”

In the final period of play, a running-clock didn’t prevent the Prowlers from adding to their lead. With 15:18 remaining, Jenea Johnson got a pass from Hannah Magnusson and skated into the slot where she fired a shot into the net giving Thief River Falls a 7-0 lead. The Prowlers managed 12 more shots the rest of the period which were all saved by Koshney, who finished the night with 36 saves. Crookston was limited to just four shots on the night as the Pirates fell to one of the top teams in the state 7-0. “They were just bigger, faster, stronger,” summarized Moe. “We just can’t match up with them quite yet, but we’re working towards that. The compete level was there and I thought some of our kids took a big step forward tonight. Our kids are getting more comfortable and were trying to get them to where we want to be, which is where a Thief River Falls is.”

Crookston falls to 2-12-1 and returns to the ice next Monday when the Pirates host Grand Forks at 7:30 p.m. Thief River Falls improves to 13-4.
