The KROX Radio Athlete of the Week is Crookston Pirate’s Boys’ Basketball player, Nick Garmen, a 6’0 senior forward captain.
Nick has scored 43 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and five steals in the last two games. He had 18 points in a loss to Fosston and he led the team with 25 points and nine rebounds in a loss at Thief River Falls. Nick, one of the top guards in Section 8AA, has made 55 percent (18-33) of his two-point shots and he has made 42 percent (14-33) of his three-point shots. He is also making just shy of 70 percent of his free throw attempts this season. “Nick is off to a good start this season, he has shot the ball well and is doing the other things like boarding, defending and assisting too,” said Pirate Boys Basketball Coach Greg Garmen.
Nick has played varsity since his freshman year and will likely hit the 1000 career point mark this season. He has 859 career points and coming into the season he also had 527 career rebounds, 190 assists, 150 made three-pointers, and 114 steals.
Nick is a three-sport athlete and played varsity football for three years. He played tight end and defensive end. This fall he received the Zammart Award and had two receptions for 20 yards and even threw one pass. Defensively, Nick led the team with two sacks and was 14th on the team in defensive points.
He has been on the Pirate Boys Tennis team varsity squad since seventh grade and he was the team that finished fourth at state when he was a sophomore and his older brother Matt and younger brother Jack were all on the team. Nick is one of the top singles players in Section 8A.
Nick is a member of the band where he plays the euphonium in the brass section. He is a member of the LEO Club and he is on the honor roll.
